5 Awesome Teaching Books to Read this Summer

Aren’t summers the best!?

I sure  hope you have lots of fun and relaxing events (or non-events) on your calendar for the summer.

But I also hope you’re planning activities that will help you grow as a person and a teacher. (I have 10 ways to do that in this article here.)

Without a doubt, one of the best (and easiest) things you can do is to read a great book that will inspire you and spark your creativity.

5 awesome teaching books to read this summer

Now I hope this title isn’t misleading, because I actually wouldn’t recommend that you try to read all 5 books over the summer – unless you’re super ambitious and a little crazy.

But if you choose one of these books and seriously dive into it, you’re going to be so glad you did!

5 Awesome Books for Teachers

  1. The First Days of School by Harry & Rosemary Wong. If you’re struggling with classroom management, this classic is the book for you. I read this the summer before and after my first year of teaching, and it was invaluable each time.

  2. Unshakeable: 20 ways to enjoy teaching every day, no matter what by Angela Watson. The subtitle totally says it all. If you’re finding yourself so stressed and frustrated that you’re losing the joy of teaching, you’ve got to pick up Unshakeable. And contrary to what you might think, this book is not all about theory. The practical and actionable advice Angela gives is astounding.

  3. Awakened: Transform your mind to transform your teaching by Angela Watson. We are what we think. And too often we are simply not thinking correctly. In Awakened, Angela teaches you how to change the way you think so that you can be happy and effective not just in the classroom, but in all areas of your life.

  4. Whole Brain Teaching for struggling students (and the rest of your class, too!) by Chris Biffle: If you’ve been wanting to find out more about whole brain teaching, now’s the time to do it. I’d particularly recommend this book if you teach in a challenging school or if you feel like you’ve tried everything else and it’s just not working.

  5. Create Your Dream Classroom by Linda Kardamis. With 50 short lessons, this book is the perfect summer read. In fact, that’s exactly what I had in mind when I wrote it. In Create Your Dream Classroom, I discuss mistakes I’ve made and lessons I’ve learned with the goal of helping you do just what the title suggests – create your dream classroom. This book includes a wealth of practical, easy-to-implement advice in a variety of areas including classroom management, organization, time-saving tips, and so much more – all from a Christian perspective.

I’m actually hosting a FREE summer book club for Create Your Dream Classroom and I’d be honored if you’d join us.

It’ll be an awesome way to connect with other educators, discuss new ideas, and gain inspiration and encouragement.
